Accreditation process

The accreditation process takes place in four phases:
  • registration;
  • system assessment;
  • on-site examination;
  • decision-making.

The second phase carries the most weight in the accreditation. This phase was chosen because laboratories notoriously underestimate the requirements during the initial phase. Only once the accreditation process has started do customers realise that accreditation is probably not feasible. In such cases, the accreditation process can be temporarily halted without further consequences. It can be resumed once the situation has improved, and the laboratory is expected to comply with the requirements.

The accreditation addresses three main areas:

  • the business system: the organisation and its effectiveness as a whole;
  • the laboratory processes: the technical/analytical competence;
  • the intrinsic professional skills assessment: the competence of the professional staff.
CCKL is emphatic that the medical laboratory is an indispensable part of the health care sector. For this reason, processes related to clinic, doctors and patients are seen as no less important than internal work processes. Accreditation therefore also covers the pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical phases of a laboratory.
